How a 200 MP camera shoots in a smartphone: the first example has appeared

Moto Edge 30 Ultra from Motorola should be the first smartphone with a 200-megapixel camera – the presentation of new items is expected in July. However, Chen Jin, general manager of Motorola’s Chinese division, has already published a sample image of the 200-megapixel sensor (Samsung ISOCELL HP1) of the upcoming flagship.

The image posted by Mr. Jin has a 50-megapixel resolution due to the 4-in-1 binning used by the smartphone by default. This is a standard practice: to capture more light, many smartphones combine adjacent physical pixels into one virtual one.

  • To the point: What is pixel binning – why smartphones need 64 and 108 megapixel cameras

The picture was posted on the Chinese social network Weibo, so the quality may have been reduced. Nevertheless, the photo weighs almost 14 MB – it remains to be hoped that the smartphone will have a large amount of internal memory.
