Houthis promise continued attacks on ships “linked to Israel”, says spokesperson

The Houthis rebel group's spokesman, Mohammad Abdul Salam, described the attacks in Yemen by the United States and the United Kingdom as a “persistent act of aggression” aimed at safeguarding Israel, during an interview with the Houthis' Al-Masirah TV.

Despite the recent offensive, Abdul Salam emphasized that the armed group will not stop launching attacks against what he claims are ships “linked to Israel”.

The US carried out more strikes against the Houthis in Yemen on Thursday (18), according to US Central Command, targeting a small number of anti-ship missiles that were preparing for launch. This is the fifth attack in a week.

This is the latest in a series of actions against the Iran-backed group, following significant US-led strikes last week with the UK and support from several other allies.

This happens in a context of great tension in the Middle East and fears that the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could expand further into the region.

Hours before a US attack on Wednesday (17), the Houthis struck a US-owned and operated ship.

US says it is not at war

Also this Thursday (18), the Pentagon stated that the United States is not at war with the Houthis.

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said the US strikes, including the one carried out this Thursday against anti-ship missiles, were purely defensive.

Biden says attacks will continue

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, stated this Thursday (18) that attacks against the Houthis in Yemen will continue, even if they fail to stop the rebel group's offensive against ships in the Red Sea.

“They [ataques] are they stopping the Houthis? No. Will they continue? Yes,” Biden said before boarding Air Force One, the US Presidential plane, to leave the White House.
