The jihadists operate mainly in the Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique. Thousands of people have been killed since violent clashes erupted in 2017, halting the development of multibillion-dollar gas extraction projects in the region.
“On September 6, as a result of terrorist attacks, six civilians were beheaded, three were kidnapped, six terrorists were arrested and dozens of houses were set on fire in Erati and Memba districts of Nabula,” Nyusi said.
According to local media reports, confirmed by an official in Nabula province, an 83-year-old Italian nun was shot and killed on Tuesday night in the town of Nacala. Two other missionaries managed to escape. The situation in the region is alarming, he added.
Portuguese news agency Lusa reported that the nun, who was shot in the head, belonged to the order of the Missionary Brothers of Componi and had been working in Mozambique since 1963.
