The image of a Roman gladiator fighting with a lion may be reminiscent of a scene from recent Gladiator II cinematic success. However, this was the harsh reality for a brave fighter 1,800 years ago and this is not Paul Mescal. Traces of bite found in a skeleton in a Roman cemetery in York, England, provide the first archaeological proof of an epic battle between gladiator and lion. As the Daily Mail reports, the gladiator was a man, between 26 and 35, with a strong body type and several healing injuries. The most striking finding was an obvious trace of bite on his hip. Malin Holst, a lecturer of Osteo -arheology at the University of York, said: “The traces of bite were probably caused by a lion, confirming that the skeletons buried in the cemetery were gladiators and not soldiers or slaves.
