Honduras: One dead and two injured in an attempted prison escape

A 42-year-old inmate, serving a 22-year sentence for murder, was killed and two others were wounded when prison officers opened fire in Honduras during an escape attempt.

As reported by the National Institute of Penitentiary (INP), o inmate tried to escape on Saturday with other inmates at Danley Prisonabout 70 kilometers east of the capital Tegucigalpa.

According to the same source, the would-be escapees lit a fire and, taking advantage of the commotion, attempted to climb the fence. But they were noticed by the guards, who opened fire to stop them.

A police spokesman told reporters that three inmates were injured and taken to hospital, but one of them did not survive.

More than a thousand prisoners have been killed in Honduran prisons in the past 20 years. In 2012, a fire at Comayagua prison (center) claimed the lives of 362 people.
