Until then, the highest level of the Guaíba had been reached in the 1941 flood. At that time, the water reached 4.76 meters.

To give you an idea of the seriousness of the situation, the level recorded this Saturday is more than double the alert level for the lake, which is 2.5 meters. The flood level, in turn, is 3 meters.

The city hall provided eight temporary shelters to receive people who had to leave their homes. According to the municipal administration, almost 2,000 people used these spaces to sleep from Friday night (3) to today. In addition to people, the shelters received 136 pets.

Also this Saturday, a dike overflowed in the Sarandi neighborhood, making the situation even more complicated in the north of the city, which has already been severely damaged by the storms. Mayor Sebastião Melo (MDB) asked people in the region to leave their homes.

Another problem faced by residents of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul is the lack of water. Three treatment plants were out of operation this Saturday morning due to flooding, according to the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae).

“The suspension of work is due to the flooding of the raw water pumping stations (Ebabs), which are located on Avenida Voluntários da Pátria and Padre Cacique, respectively. Ebabs are responsible for collecting water for treatment. There is no forecast for the resumption of operations”, informs the department.
