Helicopter crash in Panama, two dead and one missing

The bodies of two crew members were found after a helicopter crashed in a mountainous area Panamabut the third is missing, the authorities announced yesterday Tuesday.

The SENAN (Servicio Nacional Aeroval, “national aeronautical service”) helicopter disappeared from radar yesterday Sunday while en route to the Central American country’s Caribbean coast as part of a search and rescue operation.

Units of the special forces, who were called to overcome many difficulties, could not reach the hard-to-reach place of the crash until yesterday Tuesday.

The bodies of the captain and co-pilot were found on the spot.

Searches are continuing to find a third crew member.

The type of helicopter that went down was not specified. Generally, SENAN search and rescue operations are carried out by either Bell 412 (it has 6) or AgustaWestland/Leonardo AW109/AW139 (it has 1 and 7 respectively), according to AFP and Agence France-Presse.
