Planes were stranded on flooded runways at Palma airport, capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, as torrential rain hit the popular tourist destination this Tuesday (11).
The storm paralyzed all activities at Son Sant Joan airport, Spain’s third largest, due to the “impossibility of operating safely”, operator Aena said in a statement.
The airport activated its emergency plan, and flights to Mallorca were temporarily redirected to alternative airports, said Oscar Puente, Minister of Transport.
Puente later highlighted on X that the airport was resuming operations as the rain eased.
National meteorological agency AEMET said its station at the airport recorded rainfall of almost 5 centimeters per hour, with peaks of up to 9 centimeters in less than an hour.
Cars also had difficulty crossing the flooded airport parking lot.
Passenger traffic at the airport last year reached 31.1 million, an all-time high.
The Mediterranean island, known for its picturesque beaches and sunny climate, is one of Europe’s most visited destinations, especially popular with German and British tourists.
