High temperatures and problems with energy supplies also hampered industrial activity, trade and agricultural production in affected countries, including Europe and political opponents China and the United States.
The increasing frequency of extreme weather events is seen as a consequence of global warming and has already been the reason for warnings made by the scientific community. Studies project that climate change could cause a 4% loss of global economic output by 2050.
