He found a bag with $5,000 in a bank parking lot and is now accused of robbery – ‘It was like I won the lottery’

Robert Withington thought he had won the lottery when he found a bag with about $5,000 in cash in the parking lot of a bank in the Connecticut of USA.

However, according to her publication Washington Post police in Trumbull, Connecticut, say the 57-year-old man’s … good fortune in May … came in the form of thousands of dollars in city tax money in a deposit bag bearing the bank’s insignia.

Months after what he thought was a lucky and lucrative morning, Withington was accused of third degree robbery. He was surrendered Friday after a lengthy investigation, Trumbull police said in a news release.

Withington claims he saw nothing in the bag the cash showing him owner her.

“It’s not like this was planned”, he told the Trumbull Times. “Everything was in the moment and it was like I won the lottery. That’s it”.

Brian Weir of the Trumbull police said in a statement to the Washington Post that the bag of cash “contained numerous documents identifying the owner of the content as the City of Trumbull” and that Withington admitted that he had found the money on 30 May.

“He kept the bag, believing he had no obligation to return it to its rightful owner.”Weir said.

If convicted, Withington will face 1 to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fineaccording to state prosecutors.

Withington has run a dog training business for years in Trumbull. He had just recovered from COVID-19 in May and went to a bank branch in Quality Street on the morning of May 30.

When he left the bank around 9:30 a.m., he noticed a police officer in the parking lot looking at his cell phone, Withington recalled, as well as the bag.

Seeing that there was no one else around and the policeman wasn’t paying attention, he picked up the bag, tucked it under his arm and walked back to his car, he said. “I don’t even know whose it was because I didn’t look. All I saw was cash.”

But the bag had an owner, police say. The authorities were informed that an employee of the Trumbull Tax Office “could not locate the bank deposit bag. The employee reported discovering the bag was missing when they arrived at the bank on May 30,” police said in a press release.
