Hamas says hostages will only be released with permanent ceasefire agreement

Hamas recently issued an ultimatum to Israel stating that there must be a permanent ceasefire so that the hostages still in the Gaza Strip can be released.

However, the armed group has since begun negotiations, indicating that Hamas is not completely closed to the demand, they told CNN two sources familiar with the discussions.

Israel's rejection of Hamas' initial demand was expected, according to one source, but talks since then have been seen as an opening and an initial step in complex negotiations that are ongoing.

While back-and-forth between Israel and Hamas continues, with the United States and Qatar playing mediation roles, there is currently little “traction” in the negotiations, both sources added.

One of the sources commented that there is “super slow progress”, but highlighted that the fact that Israel and Hamas agree that negotiations should be resumed is a big step in itself.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday (2) that the armed group appeared to have “softened slightly” after the hostage ultimatum. He did not elaborate on the specifics.

“The effort continues, there is contact, it has not been interrupted. There was an ultimatum from Hamas, now it has softened slightly,” he pointed out.

Israel is now expected to give some feedback to Qatar and try to start working towards agreements, said one of the people familiar with the negotiations.

Six Americans remain missing since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Last week, Judi Weinstein Haggai, a dual Israeli-American citizen, was confirmed dead. Her husband was also confirmed dead two weeks ago. Only four American hostages have been released since the start of the war.

US President's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke on Tuesday with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer to discuss, among other issues, ongoing efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages, from according to White House spokesman John Kirby.
