American Judith Tai Raanan and her daughter, Natali Raanan, 17, were released by the radical Islamic group Hamas after two weeks as hostages, according to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
United States President Joe Biden said he was “very happy” with the release: “This mother and her daughter will soon be with their family again. They will have the full support of the U.S. government in their recovery, and we must respect their privacy at this time.”
Judith and Natali were handed over to the Red Cross and their release was based on “humanitarian reasons”, as the mother’s health is poor. It is unclear whether they will leave Gaza for Egypt or Israel.
Originally from Chicago, they were visiting relatives in Israel until they were kidnapped during the extremist organization’s surprise attack on the country on October 7.
The release is the result of negotiations between Qatar and Hamas, which began after the extremist organization kidnapped around 200 people in the surprise attack on Israel on October 7.
“In response to Qatari efforts, the Al-Qassam Brigades released two American citizens (a mother and her daughter) for humanitarian reasons and to prove to the American people and the world that the allegations made by Joe Biden and his fascist administration are false. and unfounded,” Hamas spokesman Abu Obaida said in a statement.
The White House did not comment on the episode. A CNN try to contact the Red Cross.
