Hamas accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (8) of putting obstacles in the way of ceasefire negotiations for the Gaza Strip.
In a statement on Telegram, the group called on mediators to intervene and stop what it called “manipulations and crimes” by Netanyahu.
The prime minister said on Sunday (7) that any ceasefire agreement in Gaza must allow Israel to resume fighting until its objectives are achieved.
On Monday, Israeli tanks advanced into Gaza City after a night of shelling that local authorities said killed dozens of people.
“While the Hamas movement is demonstrating flexibility and positivity to facilitate reaching an agreement to stop Zionist aggression, Netanyahu is placing additional obstacles in the way of negotiations, while simultaneously increasing aggression and crimes against our people,” Hamas said.
Hamas may reconsider demands
The armed group on Saturday (6) accepted a key part of a US plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza, abandoning the demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing the agreement.
US officials are in Cairo, Egypt, for ceasefire talks, White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday (8).
