Halle Berry says she’s upset that she’s still the only black actress to win an Oscar

In 96 editions of the Oscars just a black woman won the award for Female Actress : Halle Berry who won the statuette in 2002 for “Monster’s Ball”. In an interview, the actress and director recognizes this milestone, but admits that she is not satisfied with the lack of successors.

“I’m still eternally upset that no black woman has ever succeeded me in the Best Actress Oscar, and I’m continually saddened by that year after year,” Berry told Marie Claire.

“And it’s certainly not because there wasn’t anyone deserving,” she added, mentioning actresses like Andra Day in “United States vs. Billie Holiday” and Viola Davis in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” both nominated in 2020, as examples of artists who deserved to win – they lost to Frances McDormand for “Nomadland.” 2020 was also the last time a black actress competed in the category.

“Would I rather have awards or an amazing, robust, and successful career as a black woman? I would choose the amazing, successful career over an award any day,” she concludes.

Halle Berry and Michelle Yeoh who won the Oscar in 2023 for “Everything Everywhere at the Same Time”, are the only non-Caucasian women to win the Best Actress award.

Berry returns to theaters this month with “Don’t Let Go! “, a psychological horror film that follows a mother trying to protect her children from ghosts. The production premieres in Brazil on September 19th .
