Half of Gaza’s population “expected to go hungry” by mid-July, says UN

More than a million people, half the population of Gaza, “are expected to go hungry” by mid-July, a United Nations report has warned.

“The conflict has resulted in an unprecedented number of deaths, destruction and mass displacement, combined with heavy restrictions on commercial goods. Meanwhile, humanitarian assistance faces extreme restrictions on access,” the UN World Food Program (WFP) report and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

The report added that this “will likely continue in the face of expanded military operations in Rafah.”

“In the absence of a ceasefire, the impact on mortality and lives of Palestinians and future generations will increase every day, even if famine is avoided in the short term,” the UN said.

The United Nations report highlighted that urgent assistance to prevent “devastating hunger crises” is needed, not only in Gaza, but also in Sudan, Haiti, Mali and South Sudan, which are experiencing “catastrophic conditions.”
