The dangers behind the trend

A CNN dermatologist Lucas Miranda, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, explains that pulling hair with the intention of stopping the headache may not be a good idea, as it causes damage, leading to the condition of traction alopecia, or that is, hair loss resulting from the continuous application of force to the hair follicles.

“When hair is pulled hard and consistently, it can damage hair follicles, leading to interrupted hair growth and, eventually, hair loss,” he says.

According to the specialist, the popping sound is the result of the force applied in the technique where the bonds within the hair structure, made mainly of keratin, can break.

“It is an indication that the hair was subjected to a force beyond its resistance capacity and ended up breaking”, he adds.

Are there benefits?

Felipe Mendes, neurosurgeon, member of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery, also states that there are no benefits scientifically proven information related to practice. In fact, according to him, in addition to being harmful, it is not recommended by health professionals.

“In general, conventional and proven methods for treating headaches include appropriate medication, relaxation techniques, dietary adjustments, adequate hydration, regular exercise, and a healthy sleep routine. If the headache is a recurring problem, it is advisable to see a doctor for targeted evaluation and treatment”, he guarantees.

The professional also lists the best ones for patients who report constant headaches. Look:

  • Note when the pain occurs, its duration, intensity, location of the pain and possible triggers or circumstances that precede it. This can help the doctor identify patterns and possible causes;
  • Regular physical activity is recommended, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding foods that can trigger the condition and avoiding substances that can aggravate the condition, such as excessive alcohol and caffeine;
  • Perform relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing techniques, or cognitive behavioral therapy that may be helpful in reducing the frequency and intensity of stress headaches;
  • Correct and appropriate use of medications prescribed by doctors for headache episodes. It is interesting to point out that there are medications for continuous use that can reduce the frequency and intensity.
  • It is essential to follow medical advice to avoid excessive use of medications, which can lead to dependence and a rebound effect.
