Hail rain leaves white landscape in town of Serra Gaucha

The images give the impression that it has snowed in Vacaria, Serra Gaucha, on Tuesday afternoon (15). The meteorological phenomenon, however, was another: a rain of hail. According to the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, when in large quantities, as in this case, it can be called “hail saraiva”.

The event is the result of areas of instability caused by a low pressure system, combined with moisture flow from the north of the country, which favored the formation of clouds loaded in the north and northeast of Rio Grande do Sul.

With this, were recorded high rain showers and falling hail at isolated points for about 15 minutes, according to the Vacaria Fire Department.

According to the municipality’s Civil Defense, about 120 homes were hit in at least five neighborhoods: Cohab, Municipal, Vitória, Imperial and Mauá. Tarpaulins were distributed to the population. There are no injuries or homeless.

The hail forms within cumulonimbus clouds, which have great vertical development. Inside the clouds, intense air chains cause drops of water to even colder layers of the atmosphere, where they freeze and form ice stones. When these stones reach sufficient weight, they precipitate in the form of hail.
