Haddad endorses Lula’s criticism of the Central Bank

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, endorsed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s criticism of the conduct of monetary policy by the Central Bank and the current level of interest rates.

Haddad’s statements were made at a meeting of the National Directorate of the PT, in Brasília, days before the meeting of the National Monetary Council (CMN) which may revise inflation targets.

According to reports made to CNN referring to Roberto Campos Neto, Haddad argued that a BC president cannot be above the President of the Republic or government policy.

The Minister of Finance even gave an example of the performance of former BC president Henrique Meirelles. Elected federal deputy in 2002, by the PSDB of Goiás, Meirelles gave up his mandate to assume command of the institution.

The mention of the former BC was interpreted by PT members as a criticism of Campos Neto, considered a Bolsonarist by Lula’s allies and a frequent target of PT criticism. At the time of Meirelles, however, BC was not independent.

Invitation to Campos Neto

While the PT in the Chamber is articulating to carry out an urgent request with an invitation for Roberto Campos Neto to clarify the inflation target and the interest rate, deputies admit that there is still no consensus to put the idea to a vote.

Parliamentarians should meet this Tuesday (13) to discuss the matter with other parties that form the base. Arthur Lira, president of the Chamber of Deputies, has already said that he will hear the majority to decide whether to guide the document or not in plenary.
