Crypto trading platform Kronos Research suspended its services after a hacker stole 12,800 ETH from it, worth about $26 million. The platform promised to compensate the losses to affected customers.

On November 18, an unknown person illegally gained access to the Kronos Research data access programming interface (API). The Kronos team later hastened to clarify that unauthorized access was obtained only to some API keys. The company assured that the losses incurred do not constitute a significant part of the capital, however, a decision was made to temporarily suspend trading services on the platform.

“We have suspended trading while we investigate. We can now confirm that our losses in crypto assets total approximately $26 million. This is a large amount, but it will not affect our financial position. All losses of users will be covered, no partner will suffer. We are grateful for the active assistance of all exchanges on which we trade. For the first time since 2018, we have suspended trading and are confident that once operations resume, we will emerge even stronger than before,” Kronos management announced on social media X.

A “blockchain detective” under the pseudonym ZachXBT found out that cybercriminals transferred the stolen ether to different cryptocurrency addresses. Several transactions were made in the amount of 2780 ETH, 2540 ETH, 2540 ETH, 2636 ETH and 2507.52 ETH.

Crypto ATM manufacturer General Bytes reported in the spring that its cloud platform had been hacked. Hackers were able to decrypt API keys to access funds on hot wallets and exchanges, and as a result, the attackers stole more than $1.5 million in crypto assets from users.
