Hackers Hacked PwC Twitter Account to Advertise Fraudulent XRP Giveaway

PwC Venezuela’s Twitter account with over 37,000 followers has been hacked. Attackers have published XRP giveaway messages containing phishing links.

Official social media accounts have become one of the most popular tools for cryptocurrency scammers, as they not only inspire trust but also provide easy access to a wide audience. After gaining access to a verified channel, scammers conduct fake advertising campaigns aimed at stealing victims’ personal data and assets.

The last of these fraudulent actions took place the other day on the PwC Venezuela Twitter account. On behalf of the CEO of Ripple, Brad Garlinghouse, the hackers announced “a grand event that will take place in just an hour.” The tweet also contained a link through which potential victims could send their crypto assets.

XRP giveaway scams periodically appear on social media, with the latter in most cases not taking any countermeasures. In 2020, Ripple filed a lawsuit against YouTube for its unwillingness to crack down on fake videos that damaged the company’s reputation. The company accused the video hosting of deliberately facilitating fraudulent distributions of XRP.

On Saturday, the South Korean government’s official YouTube channel was hacked and renamed “SpaceX Invest” as more than half a million subscribers watched a broadcast featuring Tesla CEO Elon Musk talking about investing in cryptocurrencies.
