The FBI said on Sunday that the hacker did not have access to any data or personal information on its network, one day after they intervened on a service server in order to send thousands of fake emails.
The service reported that it fixed the vulnerability of the software that allowed the attack.
The fake emails came from an FBI server that sends alerts to the Business Law Enforcement Portal (LEEP), which it uses to communicate with government and local agencies. The server was not part of the FBI’s corporate email service, the FBI added.
The fake emails warned of a cyber attack and appeared to come from a legitimate FBI email address ending in @ ic.fbi.gov, the FBI said.
