Guterres for Sudan: “civilians continue to suffer the consequences of contempt for human life”

On the occasion of the two years since the start of the war in Sudan, the UN Secretary -General presented a dramatic picture of the country, pointing out that Sudan is in a “shocking crisis, with civilians paying the highest price”. He condemned the “bombings and air raids” that affect not only military targets, but also “markets, hospitals, schools, worship sites and displaced camps”. He spoke of “uncontrolled sexual violence”, especially at the expense of women and girls and in “serious violations” committed by both warring parties. The humanitarian effects, he stressed, are unprecedented. “Nearly 12 million people have left their homes,” he said, stressing that it is the “biggest displacement crisis in the world” with over 3.8 million crossing the border.
