The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, suspended the binational cabinet between the country and Ecuador, reiterating that the operation that the Ecuadorian Police carried out at the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas was “very serious ”.
Petro announced the measure in a post on X (formerly Twitter), adding: “Reconstructing international law is essential if we want world peace.”
The binational cabinet between these nations is a cooperation mechanism that both countries established in December 2012, during the governments of Colombian Juan Manuel Santos and Ecuadorian Rafael Correa.
The most recent meeting, the 11th, took place on January 31, 2023, when Petro met with his then Ecuadorian counterpart, Guillermo Lasso. On the occasion, Lasso said that integration “is one of the most effective paths to the well-being of our people”.
A CNN contacted the Presidency of Colombia to request more information about the decision and to ask if it affects any other area of bilateral relations, but there was no response until the publication of this article.
We also contacted the Ecuadorian government, but there was no response.
The suspension announced by Petro comes on the same day that an interview with the current president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, was published on the Australian broadcaster SBS News, an affiliate of CNN, in which he says he does not regret the action at the Mexican embassy.
Jorge Glas claims to be politically persecuted, while the Noboa government argues that he has two sentences for illicit association and bribery.
In retaliation, Mexico broke diplomatic relations with Ecuador and filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice.
Furthermore, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) condemned the incursion last Wednesday, saying it violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Ecuador defended its actions during the operation.
