I know Guglielmo Poggi was chosen as the protagonist of The all-rounder, the film by Valerio Attanasio that introduced him to the general public in 2018, is a bit thanks to Gigi Proietti. «It was he who told the production that Poggi“ is someone who goes slowly, but goes far ”. It was one of the many gifts he gave me. He always had the ability to tell you the little word that remained forever “explains Guglielmo on the phone from his home in Rome, still deeply grateful to the Master not only for having worked alongside him at the Globe for four years, but also for having understood that on the scene it is necessary “to give 110% in any case”.
Son of art, child voice actor and promising actor, Poggi likes to define himself “A fake young man” who has always had the malleability of adapting to the most diverse roles. The last in chronological order is that of Tommaso, the homosexual switchboard operator of Cops – A gang of cops, Luca Miniero’s film produced by Sky, while the next will be in the new film by Alessandro Pondi, School of Mafia, with Nino Frassica and Giuseppe Maggio.
He’s been specializing in bright roles lately.
«I like to range. In the theater, where I can, I do, however, things where people are devastated, like Natural and arrogant people e Romeo and Juliet. At the cinema they chose this path for me, but it must be said that I have never considered the brilliant less valuable than the tragedy. Underneath the joke and the fun, after all, there is always the drama that you try to hide under the rug. Also The all-rounder it was a story that, in a different tone, could have been very dramatic. ‘
In that film there was a lot of talk about the ranks and the sacrifices made at the beginning of a career. Did the fact of being the son of actors open any more doors for you?
«No because, as they joke too, if they could open doors they would open them for them. The mess is always healthy in the life of an actor. At 19, after about thirty auditions went wrong, I asked my agent if that was the right path for me and she told me to keep working hard: not even 6 months later, I was taken to the Experimental Center and started my first film. When I stayed still, I started shooting my shorts, trying to always be active: I’m happy that everything didn’t go well, constant work was a very precious teaching ».
It seems to me that you are more realistic than dreamer.
“Setting yourself limits can help you push your boundaries. For my part, I try to know more and more, to study. Being behind the camera allowed me to understand certain things that I used to ignore: at the beginning of my career, like all nineteen-year-olds, I dreamed of winning the Oscar, but now I prefer to cultivate more down to earth ambitions so then, if they go well, I can dream bigger ».
Since you’ve already directed shorts, do you think about a film of your own as a director?
«The film is an ambition. I don’t suffer from the acting self-centeredness of necessarily being there, so I would focus on trying to get the actresses and actors I direct out in the best possible way. I was lucky enough to work with extraordinary women who trusted me and who proved willing to listen ».
When did the passion for acting start?
«When I was 8 I dubbed documentaries, films, series. Since there is a bit of a violent atmosphere on the set, my parents didn’t want me to experience it as a child. Then, towards the age of 16, when I was attending the acting course of my high school, Rossella Izzo noticed me who proposed me for an audition: from there my parents, who up until that moment were a bit cautious about whether I could undertake this road, they could no longer say anything. Having coaches at home to train you was extraordinary: it was good to be protected and slowed down a bit at the beginning and then have their full support now ».
Have you ever had an alternative plan?
«No, even if I had many things in mind to dedicate myself to. At 16 I was a member of the Italian federation of a party that no longer exists in the council of my high school: in order not to stay in class I would have done anything. Maybe that’s why I’ve never seen myself at university. Since I play 8 instruments, the alternative, perhaps, could have been to be a rock star – playing on May Day was, in fact, one of the greatest satisfactions of my life -. At a certain point, however, I had to choose, and the rest came by itself ».
What is your greatest talent, in your opinion?
«Learning and listening. If I am told something it is very difficult for me not to put it in my luggage: there are those who are more emotionally gifted than me, those who have a more interesting voice than mine and those who have a different beauty, but if there is one thing what I have is the ability to learn, to make things mine before others. Perhaps, in this, having breathed this intention at home has allowed me to learn it earlier ».
