Plant 3 million trees by 2030 in Milan. This is the goal of Forest me, the project to transform the city and its metropolitan area in a green key, to have more trees, purer air, better living conditions. A project that has been conceived since its inception as an action shared with citizens and which from today, after the Covid break, regains its participatory side with the launch of the “Guard me” initiative.
“Guard me “ is the idea of Forest me with ERSAF And Legambiente Lombardy to involve citizens in the care of tomorrow’s plants: 2200 young cherry, common oak, white elm and pado trees which come from ERSAF’s nursery in Curno will be given in “custody” this spring to citizens who request them, and who will take care of them and grow them for 8 months in their gardens and balconies, and then, in November, return them to be planted in the city, identifying the best places to do it in each Municipality and Municipality.

The presentation of the “Custodiscimi” project at Palazzo Marino
All together to present an initiative that designs the future of Milan as city connected to vital issues such as quality of life and the environment: «Despite the difficult period, the Forestami project is proceeding successfully – he said Stefano Boeri – and today we can launch a first initiative that aims at the direct involvement of citizens, and which uses such a beautiful word as “adoption”, capable of speaking of hope. This city needs greenery and fewer cars, a challenge on which we will have to work with great strength in the future ».
How does one become a “Guardian” of a plant?
1) Book your forest map and sign the “Custody Agreement”
Until March 16 it will be possible to book to become custodians of a forest map by filling out the form on the forestami.org website. At the time of booking it will be possible to choose the pick-up location and each participant will be invited to symbolically sign the “custody agreement “, with which it undertakes to take care of the assigned forest plant, respecting some simple indications to make it grow better.
2) Collect the map
The March 20 (and only on March 20) it will be possible to take custody, free of charge, of a forest map by going to the collection point chosen at the time of booking.
Each seedling will be delivered in a kit composed of a 15 cm diameter pot and a 20 cm saucer together with 5 kg of soil.
Caretakers will have video tutorials available and a team of experts will be on hand weekly to provide advice and support.
3) Return the plants for planting
The keepers will be called to take care of the small forest plants, for a period of about 8 months, up to November 20 when, thanks to the start of new plantations, forest plants will find their home in the territory of the Municipality of Milan and the Metropolitan City of Milan through moments of collective planting.
