“Griselda”: what is real and what is fiction in the Netflix miniseries

Released on Netflix on January 25, the miniseries “Griselda” is a story based on real events about drug trafficker Griselda Blanco. However, like all fiction, the work has facts that are not entirely consistent with real life.

It is common for the team of a production based on a true story to modify, add and omit facts in order to make the reality become a cohesive and engaging plot. This also happened in “Griselda”.

Over the course of six episodes, actress Sofía Vergara, known for her role as Gloria on Modern Family, gives life to the character who became known as the “Cocaine Godmother” and who dominated the drug scene in the 70s and 80s in Miami. in the United States.

Born in 1943, Griselda is considered the pioneer of drug trafficking, having been successful and earning a lot of money in this universe in the 1970s and 1980s. It is estimated that during a certain period of drug trafficking, she made US$80 million per month (approximately R$400 million).

The death of the first husband

It was not for nothing that Griselda received the nickname “black widow”. The Netflix miniseries features, right at the beginning, a scene of Griselda being forced by Alberto Bravo, her first husband, to have sex with his brother, in order to pay off a debt. Because of this, the woman murders him.

In real life, what is known is that Griselda did kill Alberto, but because she suspected he was stealing money from her.

The death of the third husband

The death of Darío, her third and last husband, seems to have been portrayed faithfully to real life. In a moment of fight, the man took their son, Michael Corleone, to Colombia. Griselda also murdered him because she understood that her husband wanted to take her away from her own son.

Griselda's best friend

One of the series' most notable characters is Carla, a sex worker and close friend of Griselda who becomes an accomplice in her trafficking scheme.

However, the character played by Colombian singer and songwriter Karol G did not exist in real life. What can be said is that Carla could represent several other women who allegedly helped Griselda smuggle drugs.

The police officer essential to the end of Griselda's empire

In the series, June Hawkins, played by Juliana Aidén Martinez, is the Miami police officer who contributed to the dismantling of Griselda's operations. Like Blanco, Hawkins is described as being consistently underrated. Her instincts are disregarded and her reports go unnoticed.

Griselda's death

Griselda ordered murders and most of them were carried out by hired bikers. Her death was portrayed faithfully in the series, while the drug trafficker was shot dead by a biker as she left a butcher's shop. The exact motive behind who murdered Griselda was never known.
