Greta Thunberg left a demonstration in London with a hand – Arrested and taken to a cage

THE Greta Thunbergthe Swedish climate activist, was arrested today in Londonat a demonstration organized in margin of an oil session, an AFP photojournalist reported. Thunberg was arrested at noon by two police officers and taken to a police cage. Earlier, the police had announced on Platform X the arrest of five protesters for obstructing traffic.

Many hundreds climate activists participated in the protests on the first day of the Energy Intelligence Forum, a conference of the most senior executives of oil and gas companies. Among other things, they blocked the entrances to the InterContinental hotel, where the conference is being held.

In the morning, in a press conference she gave, Greta Thunberg complained that “behind closed doors (…) politicians make deals and compromises with lobbyists of the destructive fossil fuel sector. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Poignant and Shell CEO Wael Chawan are expected to speak at the Energy Intelligence Forum today. Protesters, to the sound of drums, chanted slogans such as “stop the oil. Nothing stops us, another world is possible.”

The non-governmental organization Fossil Free London, which organized the mobilization, complained that most of the record revenues recorded by oil companies last year were reinvested in the expansion of the fossil fuel industry and not in green energy.which they are supposed to support».

The head of Saudi Aramco, Amin Nasser, told the conference that the new investments were necessary to to replace the “aging” oil facilities.

The protesters also denounced the fact that the president of COP28, the annual UN climate summit to be held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, is none other than the chairman of the United Arab Emirates oil company, Sultan al Jaber. “We know that fossil fuel lobbyists have been undermining COP processes for decadesThunberg said before her arrest, arguing that the choice of the COP28 president clearly demonstrates the lack of ambition of those meetings which cannot “lead to a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions”.
