The largest international environmental organization has officially opposed the outdated methods of bitcoin mining, suggesting that the network switch to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
Greenpeace has criticized the position of companies, one way or another connected with the production and circulation of bitcoins, for their position in relation to climate change. According to environmentalists, most cryptocurrency companies working with BTC simply refuse to admit that the problem of global climate change is taking place.
“At the moment, bitcoin is in danger of falling seriously behind the entire industry as other participants work to prevent the climate crisis. While some companies are trying to modernize the approach, making changes in the way they mine and store crypto assets, bitcoin mining is becoming more and more dirty – coal is still the main source of electricity, ”says Rolf Skar, a representative of Greenpeace.
Greenpeace advocates changing the fundamental principle of the Bitcoin network, proposing to change the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to Proof-of-Stake (PoS). The initiative is called “Change the code, not the climate” and has already been supported by the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Earlier, the analytical company Glassnode published a report from which it follows that the cost of the first cryptocurrency is now more than 76% lower than the historical maximum recorded on November 10, 2021.
