Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told fans at a concert that he intends to renounce his US citizenship following the US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Roe v. Wade, which takes away the federal constitutional right to abortion across the country.
During a performance of the band’s Hella Mega tour at London Stadium in the UK on Friday (24), Armstrong expressed his frustration as he told the crowd: “Fuck America. I am renouncing my citizenship. I’m coming here”.
He went on to say that there’s “too much stupid in the world to go back to this miserable excuse of one country,” before urging fans to be prepared, noting, “You’re going to have a lot more of me in the days ahead.”
Armstrong is one of several American artists who spoke out about the overthrow of Roe v. Wade in the last few days. At Britain’s Glastonbury Festival, several artists, including Phoebe Bridgers, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Olivia Rodrigo, made a point of condemning the decision.
Bridgers led a “Fuck the Supreme Court” chant and criticized the “irrelevant trying to tell us what to do with our bodies”. Teen star Olivia Rodrigo brought Lily Allen to the stage and dedicated Allen’s song “F**k You” to the five court judges who voted to overturn the law protecting abortion as a federal right in the US for nearly 50 years. .
Rodrigo described herself as “devastated and terrified” by the news before telling the crowds in Glastonbury that “many women and so many girls are going to die because of this”.
Dedicating the song to judges Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, she stated that they “don’t give a damn about freedom”.
Kendrick Lamar, who introduced himself as one of the headliners of the festival on Sunday night (26), closed her powerful set with a plea for women’s rights, singing “good luck for women’s rights, they judge you, they judge Christ”, while wearing a crown of thorns drenched in fake blood. .
