Loneliness is traditionally linked to the elderly, as they become less social as they grow older. However, in the US, they are not the elderly who experience the highest rates of loneliness, but the middle -aged, aged 50 years and older. Scientists from Emory University in Georgia studied loneliness rates in 29 countries between people aged 50 to 90 years. Dr. Robin Richardson, a professor of social causes for the mental problems at Emory University, said: “There is a general perception that people become more lonely as they grow older, but the opposite is true in the US, where middle -aged people are more lonely.” Emory researchers, in collaboration with their colleagues from Columbia University in New York, McGill University in Canada and Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile, analyzed data from more than 64,000 people in North America, Europe and Middle Eastern countries.
