The 2022/23 grain production in Brazil should be 310.6 million tons, 38.2 million tons above 2021/22 and practically stable (0.1%) compared to the January survey.
The information was disclosed this Wednesday (8) by the National Supply Company (Conab).
“The beginning of the corn and soybean harvest in Rio Grande do Sul confirms the forecasts of a sharp drop in productivity due to the low rainfall that occurred during the crop cycle in the State. On the other hand, the performance of crops in the Midwest was benefited by the favorable climate”, said the state-owned company in a note about the 5th harvest survey.
“In Mato Grosso, the yields obtained for soybeans, for example, have been higher than expected”, highlights the company’s president, Guilherme Ribeiro, in the note.
The soybean harvest is estimated at 152.9 million tons, 21.8% higher than the previous season and 0.1% higher than the January estimate. According to Conab, 8.9% of the area is harvested in Brazil, behind the 16.8% in the same period last year.
“Mato Grosso leads the advance, with 25.6% of its harvested area. However, the heavy rains recorded caused delays in harvesting work compared to the last harvest, which at the same time had an index of 42.1%”, says the superintendent of Agricultural Information for the state-owned company, Candice Romero Santos.
“In addition to the intense volume of precipitation in important producing areas, there is a record of lengthening the crop cycle due to cold waves”, he adds.
In the case of summer corn, the expected production is 26.5 million tons (+5.7% compared to 2022).
“The gains are not greater only due to the climatic problems of Rio Grande do Sul”, says the state-owned company.
For the second corn crop (safrinha), Conab expects an increase in area and productivity, which could reach 95 million tons (+10.6%).
Conab informs that the rains also delay the start of the off-season planting, currently around 10.7% of the planted area. In total, the state-owned company estimates corn production in Brazil in 2022/23 at 123.7 million tons, 9.4% higher than the previous cycle.
Still according to Conab’s 5th crop survey, the productivity obtained in the 1st crop bean crops compensated for the smaller cultivated area and the production of the three types of legume is estimated at 994.2 thousand tons.
The planting of the 2nd grain crop has already begun in Santa Catarina and Paraná, and the 3rd sowing should start at the end of April. According to the state company, the total production of beans should remain stable in relation to the past cycle, close to 3 million tons. In the case of rice, the harvest is estimated at 10.2 million tons.
For cotton, the estimate is for a production of 3 million tons of lint, a volume 19.2% greater than in the previous season.
Regarding wheat, the harvest was updated to 10.6 million tons, a growth of 37.4% compared to the 2021 harvest.
Conab reported that, with increased corn exports, initial stocks for the 2021/22 season were adjusted to 7.9 million tons and consider the update of meat production figures from the IBGE, “since they have a significant influence on national demand of cereal”.
