The Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro has opened a tender for urbanization and canalization works on the Salgado and Jacaré rivers, in the community of Jacarezinho, in the North Zone of the capital. The intervention is an initiative of the Secretary of State for the Environment and Sustainability, through the State Institute for the Environment (Inea).
The community became known after becoming the scene of the most lethal police operation in Rio de Janeiro in 2021. There were 28 people killed.
The main point of the project is the environmental recovery works. According to the government, it is necessary to channel the Salgado River and carry out engineering services along the Jacaré River, in the section that passes through the community. The initial value of the project is estimated at almost R$ 130 million.
In addition to the environmental works, the urbanization of the area includes the implementation of a park along the river, with the implementation of bike paths, living areas and outdoor gyms. The Third Age Center and a Child Development Space will also be created. An area will be preserved for the construction of popular housing for the Minha Casa, Minha Vida project, which was recently renamed Casa Verde e Amarela.
According to the government, the objective of the project is to retake the territory with infrastructure actions for the population. Regarding rivers, the idea is to take care of public health, since they have open sewage and the waste thrown into them attracts insects and causes disease in residents.
