Government: EU in line for ‘One China Policy’ – Concern in Europe for ‘ignition’

With bated breath, the whole planet is watching the developments between China and Taiwan, and the military high schools that the Chinese army starts around Taiwan today in a show of force after Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island, a visit that “ignited” the fuse in Sino-American relations.

The Greek government’s position on the (new) focus of possible global destabilization is absolutely clear and is identical to the European Doctrine of “One China policy”.

This is the message that Athens is sending through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, who expressed it in the meeting he had with his Chinese counterpart in Cambodia yesterday, in the context of the work of the 55th ASEAN Summit, from which their joint position on the need to respect “the territorial integrity of all states”.

Dendias: Support for Greece’s sovereign rights

Mr. Dendias after his meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister, he particularly stood on the assurance of his counterpart that China supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty and sovereign rights of Greece in the face of the challenges it faces”, stressing, however, that he also conveyed to his counterpart the country’s position (aligned with the EU) in favor of “One China Policy”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs specifically said:

“At the meeting with Mr. Wang Yi, the Foreign Minister of China, I had the opportunity to accept his assurance of support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and sovereign rights of Greece in the face of the challenges it faces. A position completely compatible with International Law, taking into account that China is a permanent member of the Security Council. On the other hand, I had the opportunity to repeat the Greek position in favor of the “One China policy”, a position which is also the European position on this issue,” said Nikos Dendias.

EE: Peaceful resolution of issues through dialogue

Regarding the need to de-escalate the tensions in the region since there is a risk of “ignition” due to miscalculations, the EU also spoke yesterday, restating the European position in favor of the One China Policy but also in favor of peace and dialogue.

“We encourage the peaceful resolution of issues. Tensions should be resolved through dialogue. Proper communication channels should be maintained to reduce the risk of miscalculation,” a spokesman said, adding that the Union has a “clear One China Policy,” acknowledging the government of the People’s Republic of China, as the sole legitimate government of China while at the same time maintaining friendly relations and cooperation with Taiwan.
