Government appoints Vice Chancellor of Ukraine as ambassador to Brazil

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, this Thursday morning, the designation of the vice-chancellor of Ukraine, Andrii Melnyk, as the country’s ambassador to Brazil. The information was confirmed by means of a note shortly after the visit of Celso Amorim, special advisor for International Affairs to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), to Kiev.

“The Brazilian Government is pleased to inform that it has granted an agrément to Mr. Andrii Melnyk as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in Brazil”, informs the note from the Itamaraty.

Last year, Andrii Melnyk occupied the Ukrainian embassy in Germany. He was one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s main interlocutors with Europe during the war with Russia.

Zelensky and Amorim

Also on Thursday, Volodymyr Zelensky told Amorim that the only plan capable of stopping the war in the country is the “Ukrainian formula”. In a post on Twitter, Zelensky also said that he discussed the possibility of holding a Ukraine-Latin America summit and that he is looking forward to continuing discussions with Lula and welcoming him to Ukraine.

On Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s special envoy for Latin America, Ambassador Ruslan Spirin, spoke exclusively to CNN on Lula’s recent statements about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He questioned whether Brazil, if invaded by foreign forces, would give up part of the Amazon to end the hypothetical conflict.

Spirin made this rhetorical exercise after Lula hinted that the United States and the European Union were prolonging the war in Ukraine.

“They (US and EU) are defending our country. They have rights, they are not attacking Russia. They are defending us in the same way they could defend Brazil against any enemy, if someone wanted to conquer the territory of Brazil. What would you think, for example, if the Amazon were occupied? And someone came along saying: why not leave it like that? Why don’t you leave (the invaded territory) to these people? It’s to end the war!” he said.
