‘Good to see you’: Putin shakes Kim Jong Un’s hand – What one leader wants from the other

The Russian president Vladimir Putin he greeted and shook the North Korean leader’s hand for about 40 seconds Kim Jong Un at the Vastochni Cosmodrome, his country’s most modern rocket launch facility.

“I’m glad to see you,” said the president of the Russian Federation. “This is our new spaceport.”

Through a translator, the North Korean leader thanked him for the invitation and for his warm welcome.

Asked whether Moscow would help Pyongyang build satellites, Mr Putin said “that’s why we came to the Vastochny cosmodrome”, adding that “we will discuss everything”.

Governments and analysts in the West have been discounting in recent days that Mr Kim’s trip to the Russian Far East would focus on concluding bilateral agreements in the field of military equipment.

Mr. Putin reportedly wants ammunition, especially artillery, and weapons for use in the war in Ukraine. Mr. Kim, for his part, reportedly wants Russian technology, particularly in satellites and submarines.

She is Mr. Kim’s second visit to Russia after he assumed power in 2012, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency.
