Girl shot while leaving ballet is discharged after 80 days in hospital in Rio

The 13-year-old girl, who was shot as she left a ballet class on June 13, was discharged from hospital after spending 80 days in Rio de Janeiro.

Ana Beatriz Barcelos Nascimento was hospitalized at the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in the center of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. She had been shot in the back on Governador Island, in the northern part of the city.

Before being admitted, Ana Beatriz was taken to the Evandro Freire Municipal Hospital in serious condition, where she underwent a delicate surgery that lasted 4 hours.

The teenager lost her spleen, left kidney, part of her large intestine, stomach and lung. She was then transferred to the Souza Aguiar unit.

On the day she was shot, Ana Beatriz was with her aunt and cousin. The three were caught in the middle of a conflict between Military Police officers and drug traffickers.

The Civil Police reported that the case was registered at the 37th DP (Ilha do Governador). The officers were carrying out investigations to investigate reports of extortion carried out by drug traffickers against drivers when they were attacked in the Pixunas Community.
