Giorgia Meloni to lead new right-wing Italian government

giorgia Meloni has agreed to form Italy’s next government, a presidential official said on Friday, paving the way for her to become the country’s first female prime minister.

Melonihead of the nationalist Brothers of Italy, led an alliance of conservative parties to victory in the September 25 elections and will take over the country’s most right-wing government since World War II.

“Gorgia Meloni accepted the mandate and presented his list of ministers,” presidential official Ugo Zampetti told reporters after Meloni met with President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace.

The new government will formally take office on Saturday morning, then face confidence votes in both houses of parliament next week.

Meloni leads a coalition that includes Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s Liga.

Italy’s 68th government since 1946 faces major challenges, including a looming recession, rising energy bills and how to present a united front over the war in Ukraine.

It will replace a national unity government led by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, who attended a European Union summit in Brussels on Friday in one of his last acts as prime minister.

While the process of forming a new government was quick by Italian standards, it exposed tensions in the coalition, with Berlusconi appearing repeatedly to try to undermine the authority of Meloni.
