The presenter Giovanna Ewbank 38, and the actor Bruno Gagliasso 42, spoke publicly after the Justice of Portugal condemn Adélia Barros 59, of committing racism against Titi 11, and Bless 9, during a family trip to the country in 2022 .
“Almost three months ago we celebrated a victory against racism in Brazil. And, today, straight from Salvador, in this month that asks us to be aware of the slavery heritage we inherited, we return to propagate yet another victory against racism, this time in Portugal”, they began in the caption of the Instagram post.
“As we have already said, but we need to repeat: we know that this victory happens because we have visibility and because we are white. We know that we are heard more than any black mother or father who is still silenced. We know. And we can’t stop – especially if our privilege makes a difference in a fight. This is our role, this is the role of whiteness”, they continued.
They recalled the case, which happened on July 30, 2022 during their vacation trip to Costa da Caparica, in Portugal, and said that this is another historic conviction, since in August, Brazilian influencer Dayane Alcântara was sentenced by the courts Federal Police of Rio de Janeiro to 8 years and 9 months in prison for racism against Titi.
“This is the first time that Portuguese law condemns a person as a result of racism. The woman who attacked our children – who are children – was sentenced to eight months in prison,” they said.
“Once again we are thrilled, once again we are grateful for the public commotion and the Brazilian press and our Portuguese friends. And once again we must say that we need to remain vigilant because racism continues, continues to diminish, hurt, kill. And we cannot give up before him”, they concluded.
The Almada court ordered Adélia Barros to serve a sentence of eight months in prison, which can be served in freedom, on the condition that she does not commit another crime during the next four years. In addition, she was ordered to pay compensation of 14 thousand euros (approximately R$85 thousand) and to undergo treatment for alcoholism.
She must also pay 2,500 euros (around R$15,000) to the SOS Racismo association and undergo treatment for alcoholism.
