Rangers in northeastern Australia were stunned when they came across what may be the largest frog ever recorded, weighing in at nearly 6 pounds.
Nicknamed “Toadzilla” by rangers, the amphibian was found in Conway National Park in Queensland last week, the state’s Department of Environment and Science said on social media.
In a tweet on Thursday, the department said rangers “were shocked to find a monstrous cane toad.”
Ranger Kylee Gray said the team found the gigantic creature after they stopped their vehicle to drop off a snake.
“I reached down and grabbed the cane toad and I couldn’t believe how big and heavy it was,” Gray said in a statement from the department on Friday.
“We’ve dubbed it Toadzilla,” Gray said, adding that they worked quickly to remove it from the wild because a cane toad its size will eat “anything it can fit in its mouth.”
It is believed to be female, as it typically grows larger than males. The frog was taken back to the rangers’ base, where it was weighed.
The current Guinness World Record for Largest Frog was set in 1991 by Prinsen, a pet frog in Sweden, who weighed 2.65 kg, about 5.13 pounds.
Toadzilla has since been “euthanized due to the environmental damage it causes,” the department added in its tweet.
The Department of Environment and Science told the CNN that it has been sent to the Queensland Museum for further examination.
