Singer Erasmo Carlos, also known as “Tremendão”, has already said that he earned the nickname because of his brand of clothes and products from the Jovem Guarda era, in the 1960s.
The Jovem Guarda movement, more than a musical style, also influenced the behavior and fashion of youth at the time. The rock style, influenced by the Beatles and the rock and roll of the 1950s, was the trademark of the musicians who were part of the Brazilian “iê-iê-iê” phenomenon, in allusion to the “yeah-yeah-yeah” present in the Beatles songs.
The name of the movement was consolidated as Jovem Guarda with the debut of the television program of the same name in 1965, presented by Erasmo Carlos, Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa. The way they dressed on television boosted the sale of clothing and accessories reminiscent of the Jovem Guarda lifestyle.
Erasmo also had another nickname, “Gentle Giant”, due to his 1.93 m height.
Both nicknames inspired the singer’s album names, “O Tremendão”, released in 1967, and “Gigante Gentil”, from 2014.
