Germany: The government again rejected the CDU’s proposal for a vote of confidence on November 13

Christian Democratic Party (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz today called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to ask for a vote of confidence in the Bundestag next Wednesday to pave the way for early elections before Donald Trump takes office in the US. The proposal was immediately rejected by the government. “On January 20, the new American government takes office. On January 19th we could have elections in Germany. This is my suggestion. The time is enough for the preparation of the elections” said Mr. Mertz and reminded that only the chancellor can raise a question of confidence to the parliamentarians. “It’s a powerful tool, but it’s irresponsible to treat it in such a way that it’s just a delay for the turn of the year,” he added.
