Germany: Protests in favor of Russia, but also strong counter-concentrations in German cities

Protests in favor of Russia and against “Russianism”, discrimination against Russians, took place today in Hanover, Frankfurt and other cities. In some cases, protesters even clashed with Ukrainian supporters.

In Hanover, the demonstration was accompanied by a motorcade of about 350 vehicles, under the slogan “against hate speech, intimidation and discrimination against the Russian people” and with placards referring to “insults and intimidation of Russian children in Germany”. . Speaking about the war in Ukraine, many of the protesters told television stations that “Ukrainian soldiers were hiding in the hospitals that were hit”, that “Ukraine is not a separate nation and the country belongs to Russia” and so on. Strong police forces have changed cars for potential illegal symbols such as “Z”, or slogans, while trying to divert cargo on alternative routes when dozens of people started shouting slogans against them and flying eggs. Shortly afterwards, about 3,500 people staged a counter-demonstration.

In Frankfurt, the police authorities did not allow the planned 700 car cars to take place and finally about 1,000 people demonstrated in favor of Russia in the city center. In this case, too, many organizations have called on citizens to hold anti-Ukrainian rallies. “We facilitate the right to demonstrate, but we also control the commission of crimes. We divide the groups to prevent escalation. We will act promptly, consistently and proportionately on any insults against Ukraine or statements in favor of war,” a police spokeswoman said. A man was reportedly holding a Soviet flag, the display of which has been banned, as well as the flags of the “Donetsk People’s Republic” and the “Luhansk People’s Republic”.
