Germany: Only mask use and testing will be required after March 20

The use of a protective mask and the performance of diagnostic tests are the last measures that state governments can impose after March 20 to control the pandemic, the federal government decided today, after weeks of internal consultation.

According to the decision of the Council of Ministers, the governments of the states, depending on the evolution of the pandemic, will be able to impose the use of FFP-2 protective mask on public transport, schools and medical and nursing structures, while they can, respectively , to introduce mandatory coronavirus tests where they deem it necessary. The same decision, however, includes the “hotspot” regulation, which provides for additional measures, possibly the obligation to present a certificate of vaccination, cure or negative test.

The new decisions, reached by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and Justice Minister Marco Bushmann, are expected to amend infection protection legislation by March 19th at the latest. According to the RND Network, the views of the Liberal Party (FDP) prevailed in the negotiations, as Mr. Lauterbach had initially proposed an extended toolbox for the near future, while the FDP wanted to maintain only the use of the protective mask.
