Germany: Ongoing “hostage situation” in a pharmacy in Karlsruhe

A hostage situation is underway at a pharmacy in Karlsruhe Germany and many police officers have rushed to the scene, according to Bild newspaper.

The police confirmed the information, but did not specify how many hostages are being held inside the pharmacy, nor how long this situation has been going on for.

Police have been put on alert and cordoned off the area, in the center of the city, although they have assured that there is no danger to the citizens. A spokesman declined to say how many hostages there are. According to SZ, a ransom of at least 1 million euros has been demanded.

The hostage situation began at 4:30 p.m. local time.

Karlsruhe, a city of 300,000 inhabitants relatively close to the French border, is the seat of the Federal Court, Germany’s highest judicial body.
