Germany confirms to CNN the release of funds for the Amazon Fund this year

Germany will release funds for the Amazon Fund later this year. This is what the Secretary of State of the German Ministry for Cooperation and Development, Jochen Flasbarth, said this Tuesday (8), in an interview with CNN during COP27.

“We trust that the new government will take care of and spend this money in the best possible way,” he said. Flasbarth is part of the German delegation at the Climate Conference in Sharm-el Sheikh, Egypt.

The secretary explained that the funds intended to financially support the preservation of the Amazon forest had been blocked, for what he considered lack of control over the fund. “With the announcement of the election of President Lula (PT), but also the legal situation in Brazil, I decided to unlock the money,” he said.

Despite the announcement of the release of funds, there is still no official agreement signed. Details about the fund, such as the amounts allocated, are being discussed, both in Egypt and in Brazil, with the transition team.

“It is a kind of investment fund in which we will have an agreement and then a new agreement between the future government and the German government”.

Flashbarth anticipated meetings with Lula (PT), in Egypt. “There will be a lot of backstage meetings. I believe that once the president-elect is here, some German politicians will try to get in touch.”

The secretary stated that the biggest challenge now is to reduce deforestation. “Brazil for a while was quite successful in that, and we want to go back to that time. Without dictating what Brazil should do, but with a friendly look (…) looking at what can be given as support”.

Amid the COP27 meetings and speeches, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reinforced support for developing countries.

“Germany cannot ask countries in the global south not to want the same level of affluence as developed countries, but it can work on technologies that will help these countries grow their economies in a climate-friendly way.”
