A large majority of Germans want support for Ukraine to continue in its war against Russia even if it means paying more for energy, according to a public opinion poll released today.
About 70 percent of respondents favor Germany’s support for Ukraine, although the number of those who want more military support fell to 35 percent from 44 percent in early July, according to the July 12-14 poll by ZDF network.
Twenty-two percent said they did not want Germany to support Ukraine so that lower energy prices would return, according to the poll.
Measures taken to help Germans cope with the biggest costs of the war, including cuts in public transport fares and cheaper oil, are not ambitious enough, at least two-thirds of respondents said. Only 20% consider them to be satisfactory.
The poll was conducted by telephone on a sample of 1,167 randomly selected voters.
