A German diplomatic delegation led by Tobias Tunkel, in charge of the Middle East region, met in Damascus with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sara – better known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani – his foreign policy representative Zaid al-Attar and the Minister of Education of the transitional government in Syria, as it was made known by the German Foreign Ministry. The German Foreign Ministry says the two sides discussed the political transition in Syria and the protection of human rights. German diplomats also met with representatives of civil society organizations and religious leaders, while inspecting the German embassy building in Damascus. The discussions “focused on the political transition and our expectations regarding the protection of minorities and women’s rights, so that we can see peaceful developments in Syria,” the German foreign ministry said in a statement.
