US police officer Derek Sauvin, convicted Tuesday of killing George Floyd, will be sentenced on June 16., according to a document released yesterday by the Minnesota judiciary.
Sauvin faces up to 12.5 years in prison, but his sentence could be longer if the judge concludes that there is aggravating evidence.
The former white Minneapolis police officer was found guilty of killing 46-year-old Floyd on May 20, 2020, a landmark verdict in the history of racial relations in the US and condemnation of the way American law enforcement agencies treat African Americans and other members of ethnic and racial minorities.
A 12-member jury found Sovin guilty of all three counts of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter after taking into account the testimonies of 45 witnesses over three weeks.
