General Juan Jose Zuniga Arrested in Bolivia – Accused of Attempted Coup

Former army chief of staff Juan Jose Zuniga was handcuffed by Bolivian police on charges of “attempted coup”. Images broadcast by Bolivian state television show General Zuniga being led away in a police vehicle, shortly after giving brief statements to reporters. “You’re in custody, General,” Deputy Interior Secretary Johnny Aguilera told him. Heavily armed soldiers and armored vehicles had earlier been deployed in the main square of the capital La Paz, surrounding the seat of government. President Luis Arce rushed to appoint new leadership in the armed forces, while the Supreme Court denounced an “attack on democratic stability” in the country.
