Faced with the serious crisis faced in Rio Grande do Sul due to heavy rains and floods, General Akira, spokesperson for Operation Taquari II, revealed that around 5,000 military personnel are working to reinforce security and assist in rescues.
In an interview with CNN , the general explained that efforts are focused on searching and rescuing people and animals, in addition to providing health support. He highlighted the coordination between public bodies at the federal, state and municipal levels, under the leadership of Civil Defense.
Fighting crime
Akira stated that public security bodies, such as the Military Police, Military Brigade and Civil Police, are acting firmly to prevent any type of criminal action, including looting and violence against residents and volunteers.
However, he acknowledged the logistical difficulties faced due to
o flooded areas and roadblocks, which make access for security forces difficult. Around 143 stretches on 50 highways in the state are blocked.
Logistical challenges
The general highlighted the logistical challenges faced, such as the need to move personnel by air or land, as Porto Alegre airport is closed. Furthermore, there is the difficulty of housing the arriving reinforcements, since the state already hosts around 300,000 homeless people.
Despite the obstacles, Akira assured that the work is being carried out in a coordinated manner, with the support of the National Public Security Force and police officers from other states. He emphasized the importance of avoiding chaos at this critical time.
